What it does

Checks your site about every 15 minutes from EU relays. Downtime opens after three consecutive failed checks, so an alert normally follows about 45 minutes of confirmed failure rather than one brief network blip.

Checks run from European servers. A regional blip still gets caught.

Three consecutive failed checks trigger the downtime event and notification, typically after about 45 minutes.
Why it is there
What happens without it
Hosts have outages. SSL certificates expire. Plugins crash sites. The question is whether you find out in 15 minutes or 15 hours. That gap matters if you run a shop or collect leads.
Sales stop
Site is down, sales stop. Especially during busy periods.
Visitors bounce
They hit an error page. They are not coming back to check later.
Google crawl
Google crawls while it is down. That is not great for rankings.
The awkward email
Finding out from a customer the next day is a bad way to start the morning.
